About Us

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited multi-system condition. It is caused by a faulty gene that cause a channel in cells to function poorly, or not at all. This channel controls water and salts passing out of cells and so when it doesn’t work not enough water reaches surfaces of the body. In the lungs this causes thick sticky mucus to build up which often leads to infections. In other parts of the body including the gut, pancreas and liver this also causes problems.

You can find out more about cystic fibrosis by visiting the UK CF Trust website – www.cftrust.org.uk – and the US Cystic Fibrosis Foundation website – www.cff.org.

Cystic Fibrosis Unite aims to bridge the gap between people with CF and the researchers investigating CF and how best to treat those with the condition. CFUnite has been created by people with CF, parents of children with CF, researchers and clinicians. For more information, or if you think you can help, please get in touch.

CF Unite is funded by a Wellcome Trust People Award.

All information on this site is for information only. Research is constantly changing and so while a research study documented on this site may show a particular effect, there may be reasons why this may not be the case for everyone. In particular some studies may be early studies of experimental treatments and may never be approved for routine use. You should always consult your CF specialist before considering any change to your treatment, if you have concerns or if you feel unwell.

The comments sections and the forum aim to allow you to contribute to the research conversation as freely as possible.  Please respect others when posting and limit comments to the research itself.  All posts remain the property of CFUnite and the author of the post. We reserve the right to remove comments that are a nuisance, offensive, ‘spam’ or advertising.  Messages reflect the views of the author.  We cannot monitor all comments made on the site and so cannot be held responsible for the content of any post.
